Learning Outdoors!

AES teachers and students from grades Pre-K through grade 6 are taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather to bring their lessons outdoors.  Physical Education, Music, Art, Library and classroom subject areas have all taken their classes outdoors over the last two weeks.   An abundance of shade trees, our Early Learning Center pavilion and pop-up canopies provide the perfect learning environments for our students.  Special thanks to the AES PTA who recently purchased two 10x20 canopies.  Students are encouraged to bring jackets or sweatshirts to school.  Here are a few more examples of outdoor learning:

Karen Zito, our school nurse, prepared a for all staff members and families that provides guidance for all as we begin the cold and flu season.  It is attached to the Sunday Scoop and is posted on our website along with an informational flyer on scalds and burns.

Great News!  All students are now eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch every day from now until December 31, 2020.  The USDA approved the funding for children aged 18 and under.  Any student who orders school lunch or breakfast on any day before December 31 will receive their meal for free.  You will find lunch menus and a copy of the letter from food services attached to the Sunday Scoop.

This year, social and emotional well-being will be a focus area for all of us at AES. Our staff has been trained using the RULER Approach from Yale’s Center for Emotional Intelligence and we will be introducing this approach to our students and families over the course of the year.

RULER is a systemic approach to SEL (Social Emotional Learning) developed at the Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER aims to infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of preK to 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn, and families support students. RULER is an acronym for the 5 skills of emotional intelligence.

Recognizing Understanding Labeling Expressing Regulating

The development of these five RULER skills relies on four core tools: the Charter, Mood Meter, Meta-Moment, and Blueprint. These skills and tools are introduced to all stakeholders in the school community—school leaders, teachers, staff, students, and families.

Our school psychologist, Susan Parvenski, and social worker, Cheri Rivard-Lentz, worked with members of our Reopening Committee to develop a social emotional survey for families to assess the well-being of students and families as we begin this new school year. If you have not already completed the survey, here is the link:
