Sunday Scoop 12/13/2020

It was a perfect day to display school spirit and it was even warm enough to wear pajamas outside as our sixth graders demonstrate. AES will donate one dollar for each student to CCMC. If you would like to make an additional donation, you may head to  Andover Elementary Team Page.

Our students returned to in-school learning on Wednesday morning and quickly transitioned back into their daily routines. Everyone appeared happy to be back and it was great to see all of their smiling faces. Special thanks to our entire staff and all of our families in helping to make this brief period of distance teaching and learning a success! Some families have asked whether we are planning to move to distance teaching and learning after the holiday break. At this time, we are planning to return to school on January 4th as scheduled. We will, however, send all learning materials home with students before we leave for the holidays in the event that circumstances necessitate that we begin the new year from home. Please keep the school informed over the break if there is any family health information you need to share.

As we move toward the official start of winter, there is a chance that weather will impact the opening of school. Sometimes there are delayed openings, early dismissals or school closures. We use our School Messenger system to notify families of changes to the normal school day through email, telephone and text. Please contact the office to update or change any of your contact information. You will find an attachment to the Sunday Scoop that invites you to opt-in to text messaging. If school is closed for weather-related reasons, we will not be offering distance teaching and learning on those days. It will be considered a “snow day” and will be made up at the end of the school year. Be sure to send in plenty of warm clothing and snow gear as our students will be going outside often. If you are in need of snow gear, please contact Mr. Briody.

The Andover Public Library is sponsoring a Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. They have 25 “gingerbread houses” to give away beginning Monday, December 7th. Families are encouraged to bring home an undecorated cardboard house and decorate it in any way with whatever materials are on-hand – candy, sequins, felt, whatever! You are only limited by your imagination. An instruction sheet will be given with each house template. Please see the attached flyer at the end of the Sunday Scoop for more information.

Each morning, the AES Morning Announcements will be available via Zoom at 8:45 AM. Distance Learners can tune in at AES Morning Announcements.

Holidays can be financially stressful for families, possibly even more so in this unique year. If you and your family need extra support for the holidays in food and gift assistance, please reach out to Cheri Rivard-Lentz at AES or email at cherir@ahmyouth.org or Andover's Social Services Department by contacting Roberta Dougherty at 860-742-7305 x5 or by email at assistantassessor@andoverct.org.

If you would prefer not to contact either of these resources, you can also request assistance by completing one or both of these documents from Hebron Interfaith Human Services

All students are now eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch every day from now until June 30, 2021. The USDA approved the funding for children aged 18 and under. Families may opt for a once a week pick up on Wednesdays from 11:30 – 12:30 at the front of the Capt. Nathan Hale School in Coventry. These meals are ordered every two weeks and come frozen, ready to heat at home. To order, visit Coventry Public School Food Services.
