Students and staff returned to AES on Wednesday after two snow days just in time to celebrate Global School Play Day.  Throughout the day on Wednesday, students were given the opportunity to play both indoors and outdoors.  The snow outside was perfect for making snow forts and snowmen and our students truly got into the spirit of the day!  To learn more about Global School Play Day and the importance of play, click here.

What’s Happening in the Library?

Preschoolers have been learning about winter and fairy tales throughout the month of January. To continue those concepts in the library, we read Winter is Here by Kevin Henkes and Snowzilla by Janet Lawler.  Janet Lawler is a Connecticut author and we’re hoping to schedule a virtual visit with her sometime this year! We also read Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems and Three Little Rigs by David Gordon to learn about different spins on the classics. Students were able to draw their own version of Goldilocks and the 3 something. We heard great ideas like Goldilocks and the 3 meatballs, 3 excavators, and the 3 alligators.

In kindergarten and first grade, students have been exploring fiction vs nonfiction books. Together we have read a variety of nonfiction books to help them understand the different features of informational texts. Some of the books we read were Ocean’s Counting by Janet Lawler, Titanosaur: Discovering the World’s Largest Dinosaur by Diego Pol and Jose Luiz Carbillido, and Crayon Man: The True Story of the Invention of Crayola Crayons by Natasha Biebow. We also read two nonfiction books about Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of the holiday, Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport and My First Biography: Martin Luther King Jr. by Marion Dane Bauer.

I have been introducing literary awards to students in 2nd grade. We have talked about national awards, such as the Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Medal. We have also talked about Connecticut’s Nutmeg Award that is voted on by students. So far we have read Because by Mo Willems, Game Changers: The Story of Venus and Serena Williams by Lesa Cline-Ransome, We Don’t Eat Our Classmates  by Ryan T. Higgin, and The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell (so far this seems to be the students’ favorite!). We will continue reading through the Nutmeg Elementary Nominees so our students can participate in the voting process in April.

For Valentine’s Day this year, we will be offering students the opportunity to exchange cards with one another (no candy) on Friday February 12.  If students plan to participate:

1.  The cards must be in school by Wednesday the 10th at the latest.

2.  Students must bring one for each student in the class unless they are completely opting out.

3.  There will be no food/treats sent in from home, even if they are individually wrapped.

4.  Food Services is looking into preparing and providing heart shaped cookies for each student and staff member on the 12th.

Each morning, the AES Morning Announcements will be available via Zoom at 8:45 AM.   Distance Learners can tune in each morning.

Andover Elementary School received a $500 grant from Global Partners in partnership with the ExxonMobil Alliance Program to be used toward Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) programs.  Special thanks to the Xtra Mart on Route 6 who nominates our school each year for this grant!  Be sure to let them know that you appreciate their thoughtfulness and generosity.
