AES Has Spirit!

Children lined upChildren in classroomChildren in classroom

Andover students and staff donned their red and white on Friday to celebrate our AES Spirit Day and Valentine’s Day on the day before our annual Winter Break. Friday marked the 97th day of school and we are happy to report that 94% of our students are participating in in-school learning. AES will be closed on Monday and Tuesday in observance of President’s Day Weekend, and our 100th day is scheduled for Friday February 19th.

Zoom MeetingThe Giant Hug coverEnvelope

Sandra Horning, a local Connecticut author, joined us Thursday via Zoom as the second author in our Meet the Author Series. The Pre-k through 2nd graders loved listening to the story as read by the author! Sandra answered questions and shared her inspiration for the book, as well as the inspiration for her illustrations. Sandra welcomes our students to send her mail!

Your family can enjoy The Giant Hug on You Tube just by putting “The Giant Hug” into the search bar.

You can visit to see all of her books... and you can purchase any of them on Amazon or through Scholastic.

Thank you, Sandra Horning !!!

Spanish Class

¿Qué pasa en la clase de español?

In Spanish Class, we have begun to discuss Central America. Guatemala and the market at Chichicastenango have been our focus. The market is very crowded and noisy (in a good way!) and it is extremely colorful. Most items sold are handmade (hecho a mano) or home grown and it is important to note that negotiating the amount of “quetzales” you are willing to pay is a must.

We also learned about a popular form of public transportation, often used to get to the market, known as the “chicken bus”. Chicken busses are old U.S. school busses that are completely refurbished and painted by talented artists. Drivers, who own the busses, know that the more spectacularly the bus is painted, the more likely people will choose to ride on it!

With an emphasis on learning vocabulary for clothing, color agreement and body parts, in 5th & 6th grade, we made by hand (¡hecho a mano!) worry dolls. Worry dolls are a popular item at the market. There is a legend about the worry dolls... If you have a problem and you share it with the doll before going to bed, you can place the doll under your pillow and while you sleep the worry doll will take your worries away! This makes for a great night of sleep!

Here are some samples of our handmade creations!

To get an idea of what we’ve written, please ask your child to tell you what the worry doll described here would look like:

¡Hola! Soy una chica. Me llamo Daria. Tengo una falda anaranjada, una camisa morada, unos zapatos verdes y mi pelo es de color amarillo. Tengo ojos verdes y una boca roja. ¡Estoy felíz!

With an emphasis on vocabulary for family, colors, shapes and designs, in 3rd & 4th Grades, we made our own version of the refurbished chicken busses. As you can see they are very colorful and very crowded ... just like those in Guatemala.

To get an idea of what your child might have written about the bus, here’s an example.

****At the moment, we are reviewing numbers and learning how to tell time in Spanish.*****

¡Our next adventure will be in Colombia, South America!

Each morning, the AES Morning Announcements will be available via Zoom at 8:45 AM. Distance Learners can tune in each morning.

Andover Elementary School received a $500 grant from Global Partners in partnership with the ExxonMobil Alliance Program to be used toward Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) programs. Special thanks to the Xtra Mart on Route 6 who nominates our school each year for this grant! Be sure to let them know that you appreciate their thoughtfulness and generosity.
