Springing Ahead!

This past week offered a wonderful taste of spring as temperatures rose into the 60’s. Our students and staff were excited to return to the outdoors for learning as teachers brought their students outside for math, science, reading and library lessons in addition to PE classes, recess and lunch. We know it’s early yet, but days like this offer us hope for what’s around the corner. Plans are underway to bring back many of our AES traditions including field day, DARE Graduation, 6th Grade Step-up, PTA Talent Show and more! Stay tuned for more information!

Two authors visited AES on Thursday through the power of Zoom. We welcomed Gigi Priebe who wrote two different chapter books about The Adventures of Henry Whiskers, and for the younger grades, Donna Marie Merritt who shared the Teensy Meensy Mouse and Hush that Hullabaloo. If anyone wants to order the books and have them autographed, contact the school- we can arrange!

Speaking of books, AES donated 565 books to Read to Grow this week. Read to Grow is a Connecticut-based non-profit whose mission is: To promote language skills and literacy for children, beginning at birth, and to support parents as their babies’ first teachers. We collected books last year as part of our Read Across America celebration and were not able to deliver them for distribution until now due to the pandemic. Pictured here are some of the 6th grade students who helped pack and count the books for donation. For more information, visit Read to Grow.

The Annual PTA AES Talent show is coming soon! This year’s show will be shared as a link to watch at your convenience. More info to come in the future. Stay tuned!

We are looking for a variety of acts which may include: singing, dancing, magic, playing an instrument, ventriloquists, skits, comedy, poetry, recitation, juggling, hula-hooping or any other special talent your child may have! Get your siblings, parents, grandparents or whomever is around involved.

Program Cover Contest:

Each year the PTA holds a program cover contest for the talent show. If you are a 5th or 6th grader and would like to submit your artwork for the contest, please take a photo of the artwork and email to Paula King at: by April 9th. Be sure to include in your artwork Fireball, our school mascot.

Andover’s Read Across America Challenge is underway! Andover students have been challenged to read 20 books each in a variety of genres between March and June and encourage their classmates to earn whole class rewards and help AES meet the school reading goal of 3,000 books before June 1st. Each week, students will be featured in the Sunday Scoop and recognized on our website as part of the challenge. Stay tuned for regular updates!

Student Art Galleries and Spring Gift Giving Ideas

In grades K-6 photos will be taken of different art projects throughout the year and uploaded to your child’s art gallery on the website Artsonia. You will get a notification every time work is published. Parents and family members can view the art online, leave comments, and order keepsakes featuring the art such as: masks, t-shirts, magnets and mugs through Artsonia’s gift shop. The school will receive a portion of the proceeds from any keepsakes ordered. These could make some great personalized gifts for upcoming holidays. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduations will be here soon!

Permission slips for you to access your child’s Artsonia Gallery using a screen name and a parent code have been sent home. You can set your gallery for private or public viewing. We hope that you will join and enjoy viewing your child’s art. Distance learners can also submit work by emailing photos to Mrs. Waine.
