Can You Dig It?

Friday was Earth Day at AES and around the globe. To celebrate, our second graders had a day filled with opportunities to further beautify our school. First, they were hard at work clearing out the fall decorations around the AES sign at the main entrance and planting some bright, colorful pansies. Then they walked around the school grounds collecting any garbage that they could find. The students are working with EastConn this year for Planting Pals and they took advantage of the beautiful weather to plant some tulip bulbs after learning about the plant cycle and how plants grow.

In addition, five fourth grade students (Scarlet, Delilah, Juliana, Olivia and Eleanor) formed a Garden Club with the help of their parents and Krysta Cariboniand they met for the first time on Friday to begin caring for plants, planting seeds and taking care of the grounds here at AES. They created and posted signs around the building inviting students to join. Many students signed up to join the club and they began their work during Friday’s recess period. Check out the pictures below!

What a wonderful way to celebrate the earth!

What’s Happening in Library?

Preschoolers have been learning about colors in the classroom. We have read books such as The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and Swatch: The Girl Who Loved Color by Julia Denos.

Students being read to in library

In honor of Women’s History Month, students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade have been reading various books about women who have made history. For example, Malala Yousafzai, Mary Anning (a pioneer paleontologist), and Lizzie Murphy (first woman to play in both of baseball’s major leagues). In Mrs. Adanti’s 2nd grade class we were treated to a special presentation by Braelyn Young and Isabella Mendoza. For their 6th grade passion project, they made a children’s book called Amazing Women Change the World.

Third graders have been researching various topics about Connecticut. We’ve had students learning about UConn basketball, famous people such as Nathan Hale, animals native to Connecticut, and much more.

Fourth graders have wrapped up their research projects and will become the “teachers” to teach their classmates about their topics. In fifth grade, students researched presidents and spent this week editing them.

As we wrap up Human Geography in 6th grade Social Studies, students are learning about “Migration”. We will be learning about immigration waves in the United States as well as the “push-pull theory” to better understand why people migrate.
