Friday Memo 05-18-18

Outdoor Learning Day!

There were smiles all around as the Pre-K and Kindergarten students participated in our first ever Outdoor Classroom Day on Thursday.  The morning was filled with science, math and engineering activities (STEM). With the help of staff and many parent volunteers, the students explored science, math and engineering activities (STEM) in a carefully prepared environment.  Some of the stations were: Force and Motion, Water Play, Mud Play, Archaeological Dig, Creation Station, Chalk Drawing, Tree Art, Balance and Scales, Maze and Web Makers, Weaving, Bubble Exploration, and a Relaxation Station. The rain added to the fun. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it an amazing day.  Be sure to check out the rest of the photos at the end of this memo.

Mrs. Jacobs’ 3rd Graders filled up their Marble Jar and voted to have a Science Day! Students made slime, created an artistic model of a volcano, designed and tested Marble Roller Coasters, learned about Newton’s Laws, and made an alphabet of scientific words! We capped it all off with the Ultimate Egg Drop competition, and 5 of our designs actually survived a fall of two stories! Way to go, 3rd Grade smarties!

What's Happening in the Library Media Center

Students have been busy getting ready for Geography Jamboree! In grades K-6 students have been visiting the library to research and read books about their respective countries. Be sure to come visit on Thursday, May 31st from 6:30pm-7:30pm. You will have the opportunity to see how our students have learned about the culture, animals, and geography of countries all over the world.

As we near the end of the school year,  it is time to start collecting all the books that have been borrowed throughout the school year. The last day for book check out will be June 1st. Students will still come visit the library during their normally scheduled time, but will not be borrowing books after that date. Overdue and missing book notices will be sent out to allow you time to find and return any library materials. If you have lost or damaged a book we would appreciate that you replace it or send money in to replace it.

From the AES Student Council

All runners and walkers assemble!  Come participate in Andover Elementary School Student Council’s 5K Fun Run. This event will be taking place on June 9th, 2018 at 9:00 A.M.  All ages are welcome to participate in this run/walk. Participants will do the entire 5k on the Rails to Trails, with a designated area to turn around and finish back at the start. Parking will be at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. The start is also at Benjamin Franklin and the address to get there is 580 Lake Road. We will provide a water station and snack station to refuel our participants. The point of the run is to promote a healthy lifestyle.  We hope you and your families will be able to join us in this fun and free event.

Silver Sneaker Award Winners for this week:

Congratulations to Matthew in Mrs. Gilbert’s class and Michela in Mrs. Hebert’s class for receiving the award this week!

Matthew is receiving this award for always complimenting his peers and for having a positive attitude.  His effort has improved throughout the year. Matthew is helpful in the classroom and always participates in class discussions.  Great work, Matthew!!

Michela is receiving this award for being a great team player!  Her teachers have noticed that she is always willing to work with any of her peers without hesitation.  She is fair and kind when someone is feeling left out. She goes out of her way to make each and everyone of her classmates feel that they are important. Michela is a true friend and is dependable when her teachers needs her to be!  Nice job, Michela!

May is the month of “Fairness” at AES.  We will be looking for students who are showing signs of being fair, honest and trustworthy as we consider students for May’s Silver Sneaker Award.

Field Day at AES!

Field Day is quickly approaching!  Our Field day will take place on Friday, June 15th with the rain date being Monday, June 18th.  We are looking for parents that are interested in volunteering to come in that day and help with our field day event.  We are in need of volunteers who would be interested in coming in to spend the morning with us and help cook hamburgers and hotdogs for our student cookout.  If you are able to help out, or if you have any questions about the day, you can send an email to Mr. Moynihan (moynihanj@andoverelementaryct.org).  There will be information coming home in the near future with your child about our Field Day and what they need to bring (and not bring!)  Thank you in advance for considering helping with our event!
